इच्छा हे सर्व दुःखाचं मूळ आहे, असं बुद्ध सांगून गेला.

सगळ्यांच्या सगळ्या इच्छा आणि अपेक्षा पूर्ण होतीलच असं नाही. कधी स्वतःच्या अक्षमतेमुळं, कधी प्रतिकूल परिस्थितीमुळं. अपूर्ण राहिलेल्या इच्छा आणि शमन करण्याऐवजी दमन केलेल्या भावना आपलं पतन करण्यासाठी दबा धरून बसलेल्या असतात, आपल्या आतमधे. आपण दारं-खिडक्या बंद करून घेतो, कुलपं-साखळ्या बांधतो, सीसीटीव्ही आणि अलार्म बसवतो - सगळं बाहेर; पण खरा शत्रू आतमधेच राहतो, आपल्यासोबत! आपल्यासारखाच दिसणारा, वागणारा, बोलणारा, आपल्याला पूरेपूर ओळखून असणारा. आपणच त्याला पाळतो, पोसतो, सक्षम करतो - आपलंच पतन करण्यासाठी.

शमन करण्याऐवजी दमन केलेल्या आपल्या आतल्या जनावराला कायम ताब्यात नाही ठेवू शकत आपण.

दडपून टाकलेल्या मनातली ही भुतं आरशात बघितल्यासारखी लख्ख समोर उभी करणारा नवीन प्रयोग म्हणजे “मन-पिशाच”...

राही अनिल बर्वे आणि जाई गुलमोहर, यानीया भारद्वाज, दीपक दामले यांनी ए.आय. तंत्रज्ञान वापरून बनवलेली दीड तास लांबीची झीरो बजेट फिल्म.

‘ओटीटी’च्या जमान्यात राहीच्या टीमनं युट्युबवर संपूर्ण फिल्म रिलीज केली आहे, वरून ‘झीरो बजेट फिल्म कशी बनवायची’ याचा सिक्रेट फॉर्म्युला सगळ्यांसाठी उघड करून दिला आहे.

नारायण धारपांच्या कथांपासून प्रेरणा घेतल्याचा उल्लेख यामधे केलेला आहे. मानवी भावना मूर्त स्वरूपात दाखवण्यासाठी उग्र वागणूक, विचार आणि कृती यामधे तीव्र विरोधाभास, शारीरिक विकृती आणि निषिद्ध व्यवहार अशी प्रतिकं निवडली आहेत. याआधी ‘तुंबाड’ आणि ‘मयसभा’ यामधे राहीने फिल्म माध्यमातून कथाकथनाचा यशस्वी प्रयोग करून दाखवलेला आहे. ‘मन-पिशाच’च्या बाबतीत मात्र अजून काहीतरी वेगळं आहे, नवीन आहे.

पूर्वीपासून चालत आलेल्या स्वरूपाचा सिनेमा बनवण्यासाठी आधुनिक तंत्रज्ञान (ए.आय.) वापरण्याऐवजी, ए.आय. चांगल्या प्रकारे बनवू शकेल असा सिनेमाचा प्रकार लिहिण्याचा आणि निर्माण करण्याचा प्रयत्न राहीच्या टीमनं केलेला दिसतो. बोरुऐवजी बॉलपेन किंवा डायरीऐवजी लॅपटॉप असा हा बदल नक्कीच नाही.

एकमेकांशी थेट संवाद साधणाऱ्या पात्रांऐवजी एकाच पात्राच्या निवदेनातून उलगडत जाणारी गोष्ट, नेहमीच्या कॅमेरा अँगलपेक्षा खूप वेगळे क्लोजअप आणि कथेला पुढे नेणाऱ्या कपाळावरच्या आठीपासून घामाच्या थेंबापर्यंत बारकावे दाखवणाऱ्या सुंदर फ्रेम्स, हे सगळं बघायला, समजून घ्यायला, याचा आस्वाद घ्यायला, ‘एआय-रेडी’ प्रेक्षकसुद्धा तयार करायला लागेल अस वाटतं.

ए.आय.मुळं लोक बेरोजगार होतील, अशी भीती अजून घातली जाते; पण ए.आय.मुळं एखादा कफल्लक कलाकार अद्भुत कलाकृती निर्माण करू शकेल, हे राहीच्या प्रयोगातून सिद्ध झालेलं आहे.

अशा अजून फिल्म्स त्यानं बनवाव्यात, आपापल्या क्षेत्रात ए.आय.चा कल्पक आणि विधायक वापर करायची प्रेरणा इतरांना मिळावी, आणि नवीन तंत्रज्ञानाचा वापर मनातल्या सुप्त इच्छा-अपेक्षांचं शमन करण्यासाठी व्हावा, म्हणजे आपल्या दडपलेल्या मनातली भुतं ‘मन-पिशाच’ बनून अंधाऱ्या रात्री आपल्यावरच तुटून पडणार नाहीत, ही आशावादी पण भयभीत मनाची ए.आय. चरणी प्रार्थना…

Desire is the root of all suffering, Buddha told us.

All our wishes and expectations cannot be fulfilled. Sometimes because of our own limitations, sometimes because of unfavorable situations. Unfulfilled desires, and emotions that are suppressed instead of resolved, stay hidden inside us, waiting for a chance to bring us down. We shut doors and windows, put locks and chains, install CCTV and alarms – everything outside. But the real enemy stays inside, with us. One that looks like us, behaves like us, speaks like us, and knows us inside out. We ourselves raise it, feed it, and make it strong – only to cause our own downfall.

We cannot keep this inner beast under control forever if we suppress it rather than resolve it.

“Mann-Pishach” is a new experiment that reveals these ghosts of the suppressed mind, as if reflected in a mirror...

It's a one-and-a-half-hour zero-budget film made using AI technology by Rahi Anil Barve, Zai Gulmohar, Yaaneea Bharadwaj, and Deepak Damle.

In the age of OTT platforms, Rahi’s team has released the full film on YouTube, and has even openly shared the ‘secret formula’ of how to make a zero-budget film.

The film mentions inspiration from the stories of Narayan Dharap. There is a peculiar way of giving human emotions a tangible form – through extreme behavior, sharp contrasts in thoughts and actions, physical distortions, and taboo acts. Rahi has so far successfully experimented with storytelling through films like Tumbbad and Mayasabha. But in the case of Mann-Pishach, there is something different, something new.

Instead of using modern technology (AI) to make films in the traditional style, Rahi’s team seems to have tried writing and creating a type of film that AI can be comfortable making with. This is not just a change like replacing a reed pen (boru) with a ballpoint or a diary with a laptop.

Instead of characters directly talking to each other, the story unfolds through the narration of a single character. Unusual close-ups, very different from regular camera angles, and beautiful frames that show fine details – from a wrinkle on the forehead to a drop of sweat that moves the story forward – this may also require preparing the audience to be AI-ready – to watch, understand, and appreciate it.

People still fear that AI will steal their jobs. But Rahi’s experiment proves that AI can also help a broke artist create an amazing piece of art.

May he make more such films. May others be inspired to use AI creatively and constructively in their own fields. And may this new technology help resolve the hidden desires within us, so that the ghosts of our suppressed minds do not turn into “Mann-Pishach” and attack us in the dark night – this is a hopeful yet fearful prayer of a suppressed mind at the feet of AI.
